Milk is one of the beverages that is given a lot of importance in an Indian household, especially for children as it is believed to be important for strength and growth. A lot of mothers focus on making sure their child drinks milk a few times in a day, and try different tricks to make that happen, as most kids detest the taste of plain milk. While mothers can always disguise milk as fruit shakes and flavoured cold beverages in the summer season, a glass of warm milk right before hitting the bed is mandatory.
While some people believe in the magic of drinking a warm glass of milk before bed, others have a different view of the practice. Some people believe that the practice is linked with the habit of consuming breast milk when we were infants. Some people also believe that while drinking milk at night may have benefits, it is recommended that it should be consumed at least three hours before going to sleep. However, most medical professionals and anecdotal evidence give a mug of milk before bed a thumbs up, and here are the reasons why that could be!
Helps in weight loss
What’s better than a beverage that is not as bitter as bitter gourd juice as helps in weight loss? Nothing, really. Drinking a glass of milk before bed is known to aid digestion when consumed with a spoon of honey, before bed. It helps in increasing the growth of good bacteria in the gut and helps keep digestion problems at bay. It also generates a feeling of being satiated and can keep you from eating the midnight snacks, the real culprit behind your sagging belly. Milk is also rich in protein, a nutrient which is extremely important for weight loss.
However, make sure you drink low-fat or fat-free milk if you intend to lose weight with the practice.
Get healthier bones
One reason that all mothers of growing children lay so much emphasis on milk, especially those kids who are vegetarians, is that it contains a lot of minerals and nutrients that are required for healthy bones, a very important factor for health in kids. If children suffer from deficiencies of these minerals, they may not have strong bones and may be at a higher risk of diseases like osteoporosis. Milk contains both calcium and vitamin D which helps in strengthening the bones.
Helps sleep better
According to research, milk and dairy products contain tryptophan, an amino acid which is known to induce and promote sleep. Milk also contains another compound called the melatonin, a hormone which also aids sleep and sleep-wake patterns. Milk may also help reduce stress levels and induce a sense of calm, which will help you sleep better.
Good and bad cholesterol exist in our bodies, and an excess of bad cholesterol can be bad for the heart and your health. Milk contains nutrients that can help reduce bad cholesterol, LDL, and keep your heart and body healthy, reducing the risk of many other diseases.
Drinking milk before bed with a dash of turmeric in it can improve the body’s immunity against diseases like a common cold, flu, cold, etc. and may also help in treating an internal injury or painful muscle cramp. Drinking warm milk with turmeric can also help soothe menstrual cramps for some women.
